The FV512 Warrior Mechanized Combat Repair Vehicle (MCRV) is based on an FV510 Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). It was designed to support a fleet of British Warrior series armored vehicles. It is fitted with a crane and various tools. The FV512 was adopted during the late 1980s. It is in service with British armored infantry battalions. A total of 105 of these vehicles were produced for the British Army. This armored vehicle saw combat during the Gulf War and military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This vehicle is equipped with a 6.5 t capacity crane and carries various power tools. There are towing bars and cables. It can tow immobile or damaged vehicles to the nearest assembly areas or maintenance units.
The FV512 can tow a special T4 trailer with 2 Warrior powerpacks, or one Challenger powerpack. One of the roles of the FV512 is to replace engines of the Warrior family of armored vehicles. The FV512 also provides field maintenance and simple repairs.
This vehicle has an all-welded aluminum armor hull. It provides all-round protection against 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds. Font arc of the Warrior IFV is likely to withstand 25 mm armor-piercing rounds. However it it unknown if the repair vehicle retains such high level of protection of over the front arc. During military conflicts vehicles can be fitted with add on armor kit and cage armor. These provide improved ballistic protection and protection against RPG rockets and anti-tank guided missiles. Belly armor can be added for improved protection against mine blasts and improvised explosive devices. This armored fighting vehicle is also fitted with NBC protection system.
Defensive armament is limited to a single 7.62 mm machine gun.
The FV512 has similar chassis as the Warrior IFV. It is powered by a Perkins CV8 TCA turbocharged diesel engine, developing 550 hp. Engine is located at the front. It is mated to an Allison 4-speed automatic transmission. Engine and transmission are built in one module and can be replaced in field conditions within 40 minutes. Maximum road speed is around 75 km/h.
Variants
FV513 is a similar repair vehicle, but with an added powerful winch for recovery operations. Officially it is referred as Warrior Mechanized Recovery Vehicle (Repair). Like the FV512 it is fitted with a crane and power tools. A total of 39 of these vehicles were built.
